Lesson 10: New tools of the trade

So now I am using charcoal, (soft and hard) white pastel, pastel sticks (sort of a brown colour) and these very cool smudging sticks that look just like a pencil but feel like a paper cup, if that makes any sense.

I was very excited about trying all of these. I've discovered a few things:

1. I prefer pencils to charcoal. My drawings in charcoal look horrible (see the picture of the Folgers coffee can, yes, that is actually an honest effort that took about 10 minutes!)
2. I like using brown paper, because then the white effect is much, much more noticeable.
3. Cats are not an artist's best companion. They may be great to sketch for a still life, but they also like new things to play with. They will knock all your new stuff off the table, breaking all of your pastel and charcoal sticks into unusable pieces. grrr ...
