Lesson Twenty Five: Measuring with your head!!

This is a very cool lesson in proportion.

You can measure the entire body in "heads".
Seriously.
Doesn't matter if it is an adult (male or female, although there are subtle differences, obviously), a child, or an infant.

The whole human body is proportioned the same, all using the unit of measure the size of their head. So, an adult is 7.5 "heads" tall, with their wrists hanging at 1/2 of the total height, or 3.5 "heads". At the shoulders males are 2 heads wide, and 1 head wide at the waist.

Once you draw the 7.5 "heads", it's (supposed to be) easy to draw the rest of the body. Hips to knees is 2 "heads", knees to ankles are 1.5 heads, hips are just below 3 "heads" and the ribcage is just below 2.

So I copied the first (male) figure, and then tried to do a female figure without copying, adding more width at the hips and chest.

The next lesson will be children and infants, which also have very definite proportions, again based on their head size.

And once again I have to admit that once I got into the drawing, I completely ignored how sore I was. This kind of excercise does require a fair amount of concentration, so I know on a day where I need to take my breakthrough pain medication, this wouldn't be possible. But for thirty minutes today, it was. And I'm thankful for that.

And yes, Shane, I agree ... these drawings do look like aliens. :)
